Last week’s cyberattack on the mail server of the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has been found to be a ransomware attack that resulted in loss of all data in the server, in addition to breaches in hardware where data is stored.
Sources said a weak cybersecurity infrastructure, lax monitoring and outdated legacy software have been found as some of the reasons behind the hacking of the system.
CERTin, the nodal agency for computer security emergencies, has started rigorous monitoring.
NHAI officials, however, maintained no data has been lost. “NHAI had backup data which they loaded on the mail server. But there is loss of hardware and data in the hardware,” sources said.
Government sources said the probe is still in progress to ascertain if the attack had originated from China or had the footprints of PLA.
