India Halts Major Exports Of SII`s Covishield Vaccine As Infections Surge: Report

India has temporarily stopped the major exports of the Serum Institute Of India`s AstraZeneca shot, reportedly to meet the domestic demands as the country is battling another wave of Covid-19.

The sudden halt will affect the GAVI/WHO-backed COVAX vaccine sharing program, through which 180 countries, including 64 lower-income countries, are supposed to get the doses.

Until now, SII has sent 17.7 million Astrazaneca doses to COVAX, of the 60.5 million the country has shipped in total.

SII was expected to deliver 1.1 billion doses of the AstraZeneca and Novavax shots to COVAX, mainly for low and middle-income countries.

"We understand that deliveries of COVID-19 vaccines to lower-income economies participating in the COVAX facility will likely face delays following a setback in securing export licences for further doses of COVID-19 vaccines produced by the Serum Institute of India (SII), expected to be shipped in March and April," UNICEF said in an email.

According to the Foreign ministry`s website, the last export was on March 18 Thursday.
