Aspirin can be a remedy to liver cancer; know its long term health effects

Aspirin has been found to be an answer to preventing lung cancer by a research team in Taiwan. Over the counter sale of Aspirin is however banned in some states of India. NYOOOZ has tried to find an answer to the effective use of Aspirin.

Aspirin, the humble painkiller that makes it to the medicine box of almost every household comes handy not just to get relief from a headache, according to a recent study it has more health benefits.

A new study presented this week at The Liver Meeting – held by the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases and conducted by Researchers at Taichung Veterans General Hospital in Taichung, Taiwan – found that daily aspirin therapy was significantly associated with a reduced risk of hepatitis  B virus?related liver cancer.

According to researchers who have studied the effect of aspirin in preventing cancer, suspected, aspirin blocks the body’s inflammatory response, which, when chronic, can lead to changes and mutations that promote tumours.

 Health Benefits of Aspirin

Previous studies also show that daily aspirin therapy is often prescribed to prevent cardiovascular disease. Aspirin inhibits clotting by inhibiting platelet aggregation and thus offers both a benefit in terms of reduced risk of cardiac events, namely myocardial infarction or heart attack.

Aspirin is beneficial for patients with diabetes, heart disease, high cholesterol levels, and those with controlled high blood pressure.

Health Disadvantages of Aspirin

  • Aspirin is harmful to patients with peptic ulcer, gastritis, and aspirin allergy
  • Aspirin destroys platelets and is not advisable for Dengue patients as it may turn fatal.
  • Aspirin can result in breathlessness in children

Aspirin can increase the risk of bleeding in the stomach, small intestine, and brain. Normally, there is a layer that protects the insides of the stomach and intestine from the acid in your stomach. If aspirin is taken at high doses and for a long time, it can slowly damage this layer. This damage can lead to bleeding. Using aspirin to prevent blood clots can also affect the natural healing of damaged blood vessels and increase the risk of bleeding in the brain.

 Final Judgement

Marthanda Pillai, a Neurosurgeon and former National President and former Vice-President of the Indian Medical Association told exclusively to NYOOOZ, “Aspirin a life-saving and essential drug but should be consumed in judicious amount, about 75mg is not harmful to health. If it is taken repeatedly more than 375 mg it can cause liver abnormalities and can have a reverse condition. However, it should be consumed only under the prescription of a registered medical practitioner.”

He further supported Delhi government’s ban on the sale of Asprin during the menace of Dengue. Dengue causes severe body ache and easiest way to get relief that appears to patients is Aspirin.

For the Diabetic patients or the ones suffering from the cardiac problem, high blood pressure, the doctor may have already told you to take aspirin. This prescription may have differed from person to person with a varied medical history. If you are an impulsive smoker, have high cholesterol and Blood Pressure, please consult your Physician before taking Aspirin.
