Why is mental health as important as physical health?

Depression and suicide rates are rising among young people and celebrities are no exception. Healthproblems are becoming common among people in the movie industry while taking the ill-fated case ofBollywood actor Sushant Singh Rajput.

Mental illness can lead you in state of misery and can cause problems in your daily life. Especially in the entertainment industry where pressure is a lot to perform in reel life as well in real life. We have lost too many promising people to mental illness.

What causes mental illness?

Mental health and physical health are interconnected. According to WHO, “mental health is state of well being in which the individuals realizes his or her own abilities, can cope with the normal stresses of life, work productively and is able to contribute to society”. Mental health plays a vital role in maintaining good physical health.
Mental disorders are health related condition that are characterized at different level referring mainly in alteration of thinking, mood and changes in one’s behavior associated with distress and undermined functioning, which may contribute the person with problems including disability, pain or even death. Psychological factors including severe trauma, emotional, physical, or sexual abuse, early loss, external pressure, lead to clinical depression, anxiety, frequent stress affecting your ability to function.

Importance of mental health

Mental health is integral to living a healthy, balanced life. It surrounds our psychological, emotional and social well-being contributing to our decision making process, our ability to cope up with stress and how we are relating to others in lives. As far as health is considered, mental health should not be thought of any differently from physical illness. In fact, it is believed that the two are inseparable as are whole body is interwoven and connected. When the brain is ill, it is not isolated in just the brain, but instead it affects the whole body resulting in harming the overall wellness. Substance abuse, self-harm, and suicide are very common. Most importantly is the stigma which surrounds mental illness which keeps people away from getting any help and causes them to hide their pain. In recent years, many celebs including Deepika Padukone and Manisha Koirala, have released strong statements about their battle against depression and anxiety.

When to see a doctor?

Having any symptoms of mental illness is a reminder to see your primary care provider or a mental health professional. Pay attention to warning signs and work with your doctor or therapist. Consider involving family or friends to share what exactly is happening with your heath.
Just because no one else can heal or do your inner work for you doesn’t mean you can, should, or need to do it alone
