Women succumb to Cancer more than men? Myths around the fatal disease busted features • 2 mins

Estrogen, the female sex hormone that shields young women against cardiovascular diseases, plays a role in her battle with cancer as well.

The fatal disease Cancer is gender biased. Believe it or not but Estrogen, the female sex hormone that shields young women against cardiovascular diseases, plays a role in her battle with cancer as well.

Although it makes her more susceptible to the disease, it also increases her chances of survival, say doctors backed with statistics.

Doctors in Chandigarh`s Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGI-MER) argue that women are prone to breast or cervical cancer the most. They are subjected to more medical attention in their lifespan, allowing cancers to be picked at an early stage and hence improving life expectancy.

Men, however, are exposed to habits of tobacco use, substance abuse and alcohol consumption and do not care about seeing the doctor unless it is an emergency. The lung and oral cavity cancers that are the leading cancers among men are usually detected at a late stage.

Cancer is a man-made disease

Cancer is not a modern disease limited to Western society. Cancer has existed as long as humans have and have a reference in Egyptian and Greek physician books, and researchers have discovered tell-tale signs of cancer in a 3,000-year-old skeleton. It’s even been discovered in dinosaur bones.

While it’s certainly true that global lifestyle-related diseases like cancer are on the rise, the biggest risk factor for cancer is age. The simple fact is that more people are living long enough to develop cancer.

Cancer cells feed on sugar

It is commonly believed that cancerous cells feed on sweet and multiply in a person whose sugar intake is high. This is an unhelpful oversimplification of a highly complex area that we’re only just starting to understand.

However, the scientific truth remains that all our cells, cancerous or not, use glucose for energy. Because cancer cells are usually growing very fast compared with healthy cells, they have a particularly high demand for this fuel. There’s also evidence that they use glucose and produce energy in a different way from healthy cells.

The treatment for cancer is torturous, too heavy to survive

Chemotherapy as “only 3 percent effective” is highly misleading and outdated the treatment of cancer for sure is cumbersome but

Let’s be clear, cancer treatment – whether chemotherapy, radiotherapy or surgery – is no walk in the park. Treatments that are designed to kill cancer cells will inevitably affect healthy cells too.

Surgery is still the most effective treatment we have for cancer, provided it’s diagnosed early enough for an operation to be done. And radiotherapy helps cure more people than cancer drugs.

We’ve made no progress in fighting cancer

People still refuse to accept that although a complete cure of cancer is yet to be found, research in cancer has achieved much progress. Thanks to advances in research, survival from cancer has doubled in the UK over the past 40 years, and death rates have fallen by 10 percent over the past decade alone. In fact, half of all patients now survive at least ten year

Superfoods provide miraculous cure

Avacado, acacia, blueberries, broccoli, garlic, green tea, jackfruit are held to be some of the miraculous foods that can help in fighting cancer. Despite thousands of websites claiming otherwise, there’s no such thing as a ‘superfood’. It’s a marketing term used to sell products and has no scientific basis. It’s a gross oversimplification to say that any one food, on its own, could have a major influence on your chance of developing cancer

Cancer has already taken many lives. It’s important first we get rid of the myth monster before fighting the real threat.
