Hawaiki deploys Ciena gear to boost capacity to 67 Tbps

Hawaiki’s 15,000-km cable network began commercial operations in July 2018, delivering an initial 43.8 Tbps additional capacity to the Pacific subsea cable market. Hawaiki also claims it’s the first subsea cable between the US west coast and Oceania that has been optimized to support coherent wavelength technology. Ciena says a 53% increase of Hawaiki’s design capacity was achieved just a few months after its commercial launch. The cable will be upgraded with Ciena’s GeoMesh solution, which will offer Hawaiki the lowest cost per transported bit and evolve to a cumulative 67 Tbps in transmission speeds. Ciena announced that carrier-neutral subsea bandwidth supplier Hawaiki Submarine Cable has deployed its GeoMesh Extreme solution based on Waveserver Ai and various packet-optical networking platforms to deliver connectivity to Australia, New Zealand, the Pacific Islands and the US.
