Pressure brings the best out of me: Rayudu

Umesh Yadav’s start to his first over was erratic. He started off with a wide, followed it up with a beauty, and then got pulled by David Warner nonchalantly for a boundary the next ball. Yadav watched the ball hit the boundary ropes, gave a dissatisfactory nod and walked back to his bowling run-up with his head down.

Few would have expected what would follow in the next three minutes as Yadav ran in to bowl the next delivery. What followed was a beautiful specimen of swing bowling by Yadav who first castled Warner with a peach of an outswinger that even got Warner surprised. Next, he set up Naman Ojha in two deliveries and got his stumps rattled too in the final ball of the first over.

An over that had started off poorly had turned into a dream start for KKR’s defence of 168. With a burst of two quick wickets, Yadav provided the perfect foil for the KKR spinners to strangle the rest of the Sunrisers batsmen and the home team recorded a convincing 35-run victory to take them to third spot in the Pepsi IPL 2015 standings. On a day when spin took centre stage, it was Umesh Yadav’s seam that looked impressive and caught the attention at the Eden Gardens.

Man of the match and KKR’s man of the moment, Umesh Yadav spoke to iplt20.com about the joys of the stumps doing a cartwheel and his pursuit to become better as KKR’s premium fast bowler. It was a much needed win for the team, especially with the points table fluctuating with each passing game.

Isn’t it? It was an important victory in the context of the situation of the tournament. We cannot afford a loss at this juncture and this win will keep us in good stead for the coming matches. Had we lost this one we would have been in a situation of having to win the rest of the matches and we don’t want to be in that position.

We were really disappointed after that close loss against Royal Challengers Bangalore but this win will give the confidence levels of the team a new high. We would want to keep this form and continue it in the games to follow. Two wickets in the first over with the priced scalp of David Warner should delight you as a fast bowler.

Absolutely! As a team we knew that David Warner was the only one scoring for the Sunrisers Hyderabad. Warner has been scoring for them in a very attacking manner over the past few games and been consistent in his performances. So, getting Warner out early in the innings was at the top of the list for us.

We set a good attacking field for him and wanted to bowl accordingly. Bowling a stump to stump line was key. You have very little margin for error while bowling to Warner; if you get wayward towards the off or leg stump you are bound to get hammered.

This was there in my mind and I just stuck to the stump line. The ball swung and it was a treat to watch him getting bowled. It was my favourite wicket of the night.

M38: KKR vs SRH – David Warner Wicket 0:30 7,696 Views It looked like you were hungry for more in the first over with pace and swing going your way. How did you set up Naman Ojha’s dismissal?I have been playing with Naman Ojha for quite some time now. We both played together for the Delhi Daredevils as well.

I know that he is an impact player and would be lethal if he spent some time in the middle. I set him up well by bowling a couple of length balls to him and banged the ball hard into the wicket as a follow up delivery. I noticed that he was standing a bit ahead of the crease expecting an outswinger from me.

But he totally misread my inswinger and got his stumps rattled. M38: KKR vs SRH – Naman Ojha Wicket 0:24 6,014 Views How do you look at your role in the team as a fast bowler, with KKR at most times thriving on spin for success? I have been assigned the role of picking as many wickets as possible at the start of the innings. I know if I pick wickets the next batsmen will feel the pressure and the rest of our bowlers can thrive on the pressure I have created.

Me picking up wickets at the top will also help the rest of the bowlers to bowl according to specific line and lengths. If we, as a fast bowling unit, don’t strike early and leak runs, the impact of the other bowlers in the rest of the game will diminish. As fast bowlers we have to pick wickets and get the opposition openers out because every team in this competition has impact openers.

My captain and my team expect me to pick wickets at the start of the innings. Teams would always want their premier fast bowler to get breakthroughs early on. Taking wickets, executing plans and leaking less runs are the most important things for me like any other bowler.

My focus is to make use of swing to take wickets early on. Though you have been picking up wickets, do you think at times you concede a lot of runs in the process?I understand that I leak runs at times and I am working towards bettering it. Even today I started off well but leaked way too many runs in the rest of my two overs.

I am focussing on that aspect and will make sure that I don’t leak runs. I want to rectify such mistakes and work hard at containing runs. Today there were certain full pitched deliveries that I could have bowled as yorkers or slower deliveries since the ball was gripping off the surface.

I will keep that in mind the next time. If I have a new batsman at the crease I won’t pitch it up to him and avoid giving him run scoring options. You are swinging it with some pace at the moment.

That should impress your bowling coach Wasim Akram. He is happy with my performances till date. He is very supportive and I enjoy having conversations with him about fast bowling.

I am sure he has observed a few things about my bowling tonight and has some things to say to me regarding my performance. I will speak to him and see to it that I work on the areas that he will ask me to work on. .
