Bumrah credits IPL for maiden India call-up

After four consecutive losses at the start of the season, few gave the Mumbai Indians a chance to win the Pepsi IPL 2015 title. But, they came back from nowhere to spring up performances when it mattered the most. They finished second in the points table, defeated the Chennai Super Kings in their first qualifier and sealed a berth in the final comfortably.

To be in that position and win the title from there showed the character of the team. Members of that winning team have time and again credited the support staff, particularly coach Ricky Ponting for the amazing turnaround. iplt20.

com got in touch with one of the silent heroes of Mumbai Indians’ campaign - Shane Bond. The bowling coach reflected on his team’s IPL journey and spoke about his personal experience this season. You couldn’t have asked for a better start to your IPL coaching career.

It is an amazing start to my coaching career with the Mumbai Indians. The last couple of months have been sensational for me. When you come into a tournament like this you have high expectations.

Credit to Ricky Ponting and the rest of the staff for the win. The players in particular as well who have played so well over the last six weeks. The boys have worked very hard on and off the field and they deserve the championship.

How have you enjoyed your first experience as a bowling coach in the IPL? I have loved my experience here in the IPL. There are just so many new faces to work with and a lot of fresh ideas. It was back to basic coaching with a whole range of cultures in hand.

It was a great learning experience for me as well working with a great team of guys. It has been a whole heap of fun to go out and play their best cricket on the biggest stage tonight. It was fantastic.

What has been the reason behind Mumbai Indians’ amazing turnaround this year?Ricky Ponting kept saying that we are here to win the tournament, we have the players and we just have to turn up and play well. If we turned up and played well we believed we were always going to be tough to beat. That message never changed throughout the tournament.

The guys got a couple of wins under their belt and it was like a must-win game for us every game. We kept playing better and better and I think today was our best day.Probably the most perfect game of the season? The game against the Sunrisers Hyderabad before the qualifier was probably the nearest to our perfect game.

Today, Ricky said in our team meeting that we don’t think we had still played our best cricket. We just told ourselves, if we do our basics right we would be too good for our opposition. Every member in that side did everything perfectly and we were just too good on the night.

200 plus on the board in a final; you reckon the job was half done already at the end of the first innings?I was really confident of our bowling. I thought we would win the game for sure after having 200 on the board. We were still under a bit of pressure on a ground that is incredibly fast and has one short side.

But, again Lasith Malinga and Mitchell McClenaghan set the tone and the whole bowling group bowled exactly how we wanted to. That is what we have done at the back end of the tournament. We have summed up the conditions well, stuck to our plans and that is the reason we are where we are at the moment.

We always believed we had the skills in our team to win and that is what we did perfectly tonight. We got our fields in the right place. Rohit Sharma did a fabulous job just the way he has done right throughout the tournament and the guys stuck with him.

Who are the youngsters who have impressed you the most?I think there are a range of guys who have impressed me from this team. I think the two guys who played for us consistently in the backend of the tournament; Hardik Pandya and Jagadeesha Suchith have great attitudes and worked hard. They have got big futures ahead and it was fun working with them.

Glad to get your maiden IPL title under your belt as well?It is nice to win an IPL title after losing a World Cup title and I was hoping to win a trophy. It is great to be a player but it is just as much satisfaction particularly when you get to enjoy the success of the guys who have played so well. .
