Tripura poll turnout touches 90% mark

AGARTALA: The poll percentage in the Tripura assembly election, which has always been high, touched the 90%-mark in this year's polls and may go up even further after counting of postal ballots on March 3. CPM state secretary Bijan Dhar said IPFT cadres not only prevented polling agents of his party from entering booths in many areas of Takarjala, Golaghati and Simna constituencies, they also stopped voters from reaching polling stations. He added that the Election Commission (EC), aniticipating post-poll violence, has decided to keep central forces in the state till the entire election process gets over.CPM, on the other hand, has raised allegations of violence in nine seats from where the Indigenous Peoples' Front of Tripura (IPFT) contested the election. He alleged that BJP used money power to sway the electorate in its favour in the general seats.The party was also critical of the decision to appoint ITBP director general RK Pachnanda as special police observer, two days before the polling. He added that the last team of election officials returned at 1 am and the process of EVM submission got over early in the morning.Taranikanta said all the EVMs have been stored in strong rooms with foolproof security arrangements.

Nearly 92% of the electorate had exercise their franchise in the last election in 2013.Informing this, state chief electoral officer Sriram Taranikanta on Monday said though polling got delayed in 519 booths due to EVM and VVPAT snags initially, voting continued till late at night in many places. He added that the last team of election officials returned at 1 am and the process of EVM submission got over early in the morning.Taranikanta said all the EVMs have been stored in strong rooms with foolproof security arrangements.
