Biplab Deb: Will make Tripura a model state in 3 years

The Union home ministry approved the erection of barbed wire fencing covering nearly 863 km in Tripura along the Bangladesh border. "Our focus is to make Tripura a model state in the next three years. In 2016, the Centre had promised to seal the entire stretch of shared border with Bangladesh in Tripura and Assam by 2018. Later this month, Union home minister Rajnath Singh is set to visit the state to assess the progress of work along the India-Bangladesh border. "We want optimum output from the employees and have zero tolerance for corruption and dereliction of duty," Deb said.

AGARTALA: A month into the formation of Tripura 's first BJP-led government, chief minister Biplab Deb has been able to get central approval for long-pending projects worth Rs 3,000 crore in addition to securing the release of more than Rs 2,500 crore in funds for various sponsored projects.The state is poised to become the first to seal the border with Bangladesh completely. Deb, who has spent the better part of his first month in office meeting central leaders, has got assurance from the Centre that fencing along the few remaining sections of the India-Bangladesh border in Tripura will be completed soon. In 2016, the Centre had promised to seal the entire stretch of shared border with Bangladesh in Tripura and Assam by 2018. Of this, work has been completed along 772.5 km, leaving just 13% of the stretch unfenced. Later this month, Union home minister Rajnath Singh is set to visit the state to assess the progress of work along the India-Bangladesh border. The state has also been promised two more India Reserve Battalions.Another breakthrough came when the investigation into the murders of journalists Shantanu Bhowmik and Sudip Datta Bhowmik was handed over to CBI after relentless protests.Cracking down on corruption within the first week of assuming power, Deb suspended four government employees at Gandacherra in Dhalai district for the poor quality of work in toilet construction. "We want optimum output from the employees and have zero tolerance for corruption and dereliction of duty," Deb said. "Our focus is to make Tripura a model state in the next three years. We want to engage all stakeholders in the process of development," he added.
