  • | Wednesday | 25th April, 2018

AGARTALA: 15 members out of the 21-member Udaipur Municipal Council in south Tripura, including its chairman, resigned on Monday alleging repeated threats and intimidation from BJP cadres since the announcement of election result on March 3.Though chairman Subrata Deb did not cite any reason for his resignation, CPM alleged that the BJP workers had assaulted him, asking him to resign a month ago. Only the intervention of chief minister Biplab Deb and agriculture minister Pranajit Singharoy had reportedly stopped him from resigning back then. Both of them had requested the chairman to continue in his office without fear but things changed when on April 22, a group of BJP workers reportedly stormed into his house and asked him to step down along with the other CPM members.Deb and 14 of his party councillors accordingly tendered their resignation on Monday. However, local BJP leaders denied the allegation and stated that the chairman had taken the decision after a group of youths barged into his house and insulted him for failing to take steps to prevent the recent water-logging in Udaipur.
