GUWAHATI/ SILCHAR/ AGARTALA : Two more persons died on Monday as Assam reeled from the first wave of monsoon floods that hit the state impacting more than 5.50 lakh people in six districts. The death toll climbed to 13 in the week-long devastation. The two deaths were reported from Cachar and Hailakandi districts.Of the six districts under water-Nagaon, Hojai, Golaghat, Cachar, Hailakandi and Karimganj-the latter was the worst affected, with about 2.40 lakh people marooned. Nearly 1.60 lakh people took shelter in 437 camps in the six affected districts. Over 2,000 hectare of cropland was also damaged.On Monday, fresh landslides, triggered by torrential rain, were reported from the Dima Hasao hill district in southern Assam. The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) said 2,126 people had to be evacuated from 30 landslide-hit villages in Mahur, Harangajao and Maibang. No human casualty was reported but 635 houses were completely damaged. The ASDMA said 8,201 people were evacuated by teams of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF).The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) said train services had resumed along Lumding-Badarpur and Badarpur-Agartala sections. However, rail traffic was suspended between Silchar and Badarpur in the Barak Valley. NFR chief public relations officer Pranav Jyoti Sharma said train traffic between Silchar and Badarpur had to be suspended as some portion of the track between Panchgram and Katakhal were under water. "Efforts are on to resume train services as early as possible once the floodwaters recede," Sharma added.
