Tripura trader lynched on rumours of child-lifting

AGARTALA: Led by social media rumours of child-lifters on the prowl, an irate mob lynched a garment-seller and bashed up two of his aides and his driver in the Murabari area of Mohanpur in west Tripura on Thursday. While Jahir was beaten to death with sticks near a Tripura State Rifles camp, Khurshid and Guljar, along with Swapan Miah (driver), managed to escape by taking help of some TSR jawans. Police have detained three persons in connection with the assault.District magistrate (West Tripura) Sandeep K Mahatme said Jahir Khan, Khurshid Khan and Guljar Khan-all from UP- were attacked when they went to Murabari, a tribal-dominated village, along with their driver, to sell garments. The trio has been shifted to Agartala Government Medical College.DIG (Southern Range) Arindam Nath said police had to resort to lathicharge and fire teargas shells to bring the situation under control.The Tripura government has imposed a ban on SMS and mobile internet/data service for 48 hours from Thursday.
