Tripura concern over rising crimes

AGARTALA: The assembly on Tuesday expressed serious concern over the increasing rate of crime in the state since the new government took over in March this year.Requesting the chief minister to deal with the rising crime rate with an iron hand, opposition MLAs alleged that gun culture has raised its head after the BJP-IPFT government has come to power and that a few hundred illegal arms have been brought to the state from Jharkhand and Bihar . CPM MLA Tapan Chakraborty said, We demand immediate steps to ensure peace and tranquillity. People should not feel afraid to walk alone at night in Tripura . But gradually the situation is taking a very bad turn."Replying a query raised by CPM MLA Ramendra Chandra Nath, chief minister Biplab Kumar Deb informed the assembly that the state has seen as many as 75 incidents of violence since the new government assumed power. At least 36 cases of rapes, including two gang-rapes, and 39 cases of sexual assaults on women were reported with police since BJP-IPFT assumed power. Altogether 50 persons have been arrested in connection with cases of violence against women.The chief minister also said as many as 21 have been arrested for their alleged involvement in rapes, 5 for alleged involvement with gang-rapes and 24 for alleged involvement in sexual assaults in the same period. Biplab added that the state police have launched 14 GPS-enabled mobile police patrol vans in the city to facilitate more accurate and quicker responses to emergency and distress calls.Members of the assembly also expressed concern over increasing incidents of shoot-outs and murder of civilians. On Tuesday, a middle-aged person was found dead at Khayerpur area. Two days earlier, a BJP worker, Biswajit Paul, was shot dead in front of his house. Police arrested one of his neighbours in connection with the case.
