Tripura proposes shift in policy to boost tourism

AGARTALA: Chief minister Biplab Kumar Deb , reviewing the activities of the mission of his government to make the state a tourism hub, on Tuesday directed that the ban on photography in tourist destinations be lifted and night stays in some locations be reintroduced for attracting tourists.Photography is banned in most tourist places of the state and tourists are not allowed to stay in most guest houses in tourism destinations despite infrastructure being available. The chief minister stressed on ensuring world-class facilities in all tourist destinations of Tripura and asserted that the government is going to make necessary chances in the tourism policy to increase footfall here. He said PM Narendra Modi recently directed the officials of ASI for removing restrictions on photography in ASI sites.The tourism department was asked to prepare an action plan with a stress on utilizing technology to promote the state's tourism inside and outside the country. Deb further emphasized on releasing a Tripura guide - Tripura Parikrama - along with details of tourist destinations of the state and attractive photographs. He has also asked to prepare a plan for construction of a ropeway between Mata Tripureswari temple and Bhubaneswari temple in Udaipur; besides looking at the other places where ropeway services can be installed.The chief minister also asked the state's pineapple fruit, flora, fauna, historical sites and temples be promoted. Improvement of ancillary services like hotels, local transport system, cleanliness and further enhancement of security in the tourist places were also discussed in the meeting.Due to management probmels, the previous government did not allow night stay in any of the wildlife sanctuaries, or in Mandirghar and Dumbur; tourism officials said. Insurgency had also been a reason why staying at night at some of these locations had been prohibited."In spite of huge potential, the tourism industry could not grow in the state earlier. The new government is going to bring a change in the system," said a senior official of the tourism department, adding that the state government had given licenses to a good number of liquor shops in small towns and market but did not issue a single license to a single bar."There is no check in the quality of liquor sold in the state and their price. The government is losing lakhs of rupees every day because of non-regulation of the liquor business, which is proposed to be looked into immediately," the officer added.
