AGARTALA: Tripura chief minister Biplab Deb has accused his predecessor Manik Sarkar of being "the most corrupt" chief minister."Manik Sarkar was the most corrupt chief minister. He tried to destroy the state ... He looked like a sant (saint) - sitting coyly with folded hands but just like in a movie, sometimes you have such characters with a haul of sone ka biscuit (gold biscuits) behind their back. Now people are getting the real picture," Deb said in an interview on the sidelines of BJP's national executive committee meeting.Sarkar was the country's poorest chief minister for his entire tenure, spanning 20 years. The context of his statement, Deb said, was Tripura's "drug menace".He added, "The previous government did not take action against drug peddling. As a result, a section of youngsters get involved in the drug racket and a large number of youth became addicted to drug, the economy got fragile and smuggling of drug to neghibouring Bangladesh ... We have seized a huge quantity of cannabis, along with brown sugar , heroin and cocaine . There was intentional support earlier. Even if there was information, they used to sit on it and do nothing. It was a Rs 1,500-2,000 crore business. We have made 204 arrests, a majority of them turned out to be CPM men."In the run-up to the assembly election, BJP general secretary Ram Madhav had made a similar statement but steered clear of calling Sarkar himself "corrupt" and, instead, blamed him for heading a "corrupt government".CPM dismissed these allegations and challenged BJP to furnish proof."It is unfortunate. Let him (Deb) prove that Sarkar was a corrupt chief minister. Now they have formed the government. If the chief minister makes a statement, it must be backed by facts and figures - not conjecture," CPM state committee member and senior party leader Pabitra Kar said.
