AGARTALA: Accepting the demand of coalition partner Indigenous Peoples' Front of Tripura (IPFT), the BJP-led state government has agreed to withdraw cases registered against IPFT workers involved in the recent attack on BJP MLA Birendra Kishore Debbarma in Golaghati and in a few other incidents in Jampui sub-division of Sepahijala district.On Monday, police released two persons arrested in connection with the MLA attack case. The IPFT workers had launched an agitation in Golaghati and Jampuijala areas on Sunday to press for the demand and also blocked roads. On Monday - a day after BJP and IPFT took the decision to bury the hatchet over the selection of chairman of block advisory committee and filing of nomination in panchayat bypoll - IPFT workers launched an indefinite strike.In the last few months, a number of cases have been registered against IPFT cadres allegedly for perpetrating violence in various parts of the state."While some cases were lodged by the people concerned, others were filed by the state government. BJP as a party did not register any case against anybody. So, it is not possible for us to ensure withdrawal of all cases. We can of course facilitate the process and request for doing so. The IPFT workers need to understand this," said a BJP leader.The IPFT, however, indicated that it would continue its agitation for withdrawal of all cases filed against its workers in the last six months.Based on the complaint of Debbarma, police picked up two IPFT workers on Monday for allegedly ransacking his house and assaulting his family members last week. The same day, IPFT workers led by local MLA Prem Kumar Reang staged a mass rally at Kanchanpur demanding legal action against BJP activists involved in assaulting IPFT workers and their vice-president Ananta Debbarma at Jubarajnagar in North Tripura last week during filing of nomination for the civic bypoll.On the other hand, an IPFT delegation headed by its supremo NC Debbarma met BJP national general secretary Ram Madhav on Monday and assured his full support to the government.
