Myanmar drug mafia planned to kill Biplab Deb: BJP

"The mafia met last week in Myanmar and came up with a plan to assassinate the chief minister," BJP legislator Ratan Chakraborty claimed. "The conspiracy was hatched because the chief minister took effective action against drug smuggling," BJP general secretary Rajib Bhattacharjee said. "I don't know of such issues, but the action taken by my government against drug peddlers has made a difference and, therefore, made some people unhappy. "We received an advisory from the MHA two days ago about the chief minister being targeted by drug peddlers," a senior government official said on Wednesday. In response, additional security cover has been provided to Deb and his family, a state home department official said.

AGARTALA: The state has stepped up security for chief minister Biplab Deb after a Union home ministry advisory suggested that Deb may be under threat from the Myanmar-based drug mafia.Illegal drug traders in the region - dealing primarily in synthetic drugs like Yaba and heroin - use Tripura and Mizoram as corridors from Myanmar and other Asian countries to Bangladesh and other parts of India. "The mafia met last week in Myanmar and came up with a plan to assassinate the chief minister," BJP legislator Ratan Chakraborty claimed."We received an advisory from the MHA two days ago about the chief minister being targeted by drug peddlers," a senior government official said on Wednesday. In response, additional security cover has been provided to Deb and his family, a state home department official said. "In light of the reported threat to his life, the government has also initiated the procedure to elevate his security cover from the present Y category to Z category," the official added. Security officials did not want to comment on the matter."I don't know of such issues, but the action taken by my government against drug peddlers has made a difference and, therefore, made some people unhappy. It is obvious criminals will try and disturb us," Deb said.In the six months the BJP-IPFT coalition has been in power, more than 250 people associated with illegal drug trade have been arrested and contraband drugs worth a few hundred crores seized in Tripura. "The conspiracy was hatched because the chief minister took effective action against drug smuggling," BJP general secretary Rajib Bhattacharjee said.
