The Opposition CPI-M and Congress have demanded a judicial probe into the alleged custodial torture and death of a 38-year-old man at West Agartala police station in west Tripura. Sushanta Ghosh, a resident of Lankamura in West Tripura, who was arrested by cyber crime branch of Tripura police on Saturday in connection with ATM hacking case in Agartala, died in police custody on Sunday morning. The family members of the deceased alleged that Ghosh died due to custodial torture in West Agartala police station. The Tripura Congress has demanded compensation of Rs 25 lakh to the family of the victim. Congress president Pijush Biswas said the role of police are not beyond doubt. “How can an arrested man commit suicide in police lock-up,” Ghosh questioned. A team of CPI-M leaders on Tuesday morning met the family members of Ghosh at their residence at Lankamura CPI-M leader Pabitra Kar demanded a judicial inquiry into the incident by a sitting judge of Tripura High Court. “The facts and truth behind the matter can be brought out only through a judicial investigation,” said Kar. The CPI-M leader said, “The government must take strict action against the police officials, who were on duty, when the incident took place.” He also sought National Human Right Commission (NHRC)s intervention in the matter. The CPI-M activists on Monday night staged a protest in Agartala seeking action against the guilty police officials. Earlier, chief minister Biplab Kumar Deb ordered a magisterial probe into the incident.
