The Tripura government will provide Rs 5 lakhs as compensation to the family of Liton Nath who was recently abducted and killed by insurgents. Deputy chief minister Jishnu Deb Barma announced this and said that all possible assistance will be provided to the victims family. Liton Nath (35) was a fish seller by profession and a resident of the Jayrampara area near Katua Bridge under a remote Damcherra police station in North Tripura district. National Liberation Front of Tripura (NLFT) cadres had abducted him on November 27 from his house. The banned outfit demanded a ransom of Rs 1.5 lakh from his family. The police recovered the body of Liton Nath from a forest at Ranipara in North Tripura district on January 15. The police failed to trace the victims whereabouts even after 47 days of his abduction. Police managed to gather information about Nath after interrogating four NLFT cadres who had been picked up from Takarjala area in Sepahijala district. Meanwhile, the people on January 17 also organized a torch rally at Kanchanpur town to condemn the killing of Nath. They also raised slogans against the state government for the failure of police in recovering the victim from the captivity of the extremists. Jishnu Deb Barma said, “The death of Liton is painful and unfortunate. Life cant be measured by money.” “Our government stands by the family of the victim and we will provide a compensation of Rs 5 lakh to his family,” said Deb Barma. Nath is survived by his wife and four children. His wife works as a day labourer to run the family. The deputy CM also warned that the government would take strict action if anyone attempts to disrupt the peace and harmony prevailing in the state.
