AGARTALA: After her long battle with hydrocephalus , six-year-old Roona Begam from Jirania Khola locality on the eastern outskirts of Agartala , breathed her last on Sunday. The disease caused cerebrospinal fluid to build up in her brain weeks after her birth. Unfortunately, due to acute poverty, her family could not afford treatment till she turned 18 months old. TOI had narrated her story in April 2013, which prompted many charitable foundations, trusts and individuals across the world to extend help.Following the reports, a private hospital based in Gurgaon took Roona and her parents to Delhi, sponsored her treatment and carried out two critical surgeries on her brain in 2014.After the operations, she was relieved from the pain caused by the unusual swelling of her head and the related symptoms, but by then most of her other organs were deteriorating. She was under continuous medication of a team of nationally acclaimed super specialists comprising paediatric neurologists, psychologists, cardiologists and ophthalmologist for the past three years.Although generous support was provided till the end of her treatment, her poverty-stricken parents were not able to feed her adequately after the treatment, despite their tireless efforts. "We did not mind to pass two-three days without proper meal but we were happy that at least we could provide our best to our beloved child. We had to keep Roona smiling because we are indebted to all those well-wishers who extended unconditional support and blessings for her recovery, all thanks to the media," said Fatema, Roona's mother. As Roona's condition was fast deteriorating she was supposed to be shifted to the hospital in Gurgaon in next couple of days. But, on Sunday afternoon, she developed severe breathing problems and within two hours passed away. The local doctors attending to Roona issued her death certificate, said Abdul Rahman , her father, a labourer.
