Flash floods bring Tripura districts to standstill

AGARTALA: Continuous rain for nine hours on Friday triggered flash floods in West Tripura Sepahijala and Khowai districts and has rendered more than 3000 families homeless in the state. Life in the capital city came to a standstill with most government offices, schools and other institutions being inundated. Seven houses have been reported to be damaged and a 40-year-old woman was injured in Bishalgarh when a house collapsed with her inside. Patients were shifted from many wards of Agartala Govt Medical College due to water entering the hospital compound. The disaster management authority and the district administration is taking all anticipatory measures to minimize damage when water from the Baramura range flows down.

AGARTALA: Continuous rain for nine hours on Friday triggered flash floods in West Tripura Sepahijala and Khowai districts and has rendered more than 3000 families homeless in the state. Seven houses have been reported to be damaged and a 40-year-old woman was injured in Bishalgarh when a house collapsed with her inside. Life in the capital city came to a standstill with most government offices, schools and other institutions being inundated. National Disaster and Rescue Force (NDRF) pressed at least eight boats in operation in the city and as many as 2800 families were rescued and shifted to 30 relief camps. Chief Minister Manik Sarkar reviewed the situation with top administrative officers, but the director general of police and district magistrate of West Tripura were unable to attend because their offices were inundated.The river Howrah in the capital has been flowing above danger level. The disaster management authority and the district administration is taking all anticipatory measures to minimize damage when water from the Baramura range flows down."We have made all necessary arrangements to counter any eventuality at night, as travel time of water from the hill to Howrah river is about two hours. All the families have been shifted to safe locations by now from river banks anticipating the severity of flood at night," said revenue minister Badal Chowdhury 170.3 mm rainfall has been received in the city over the last 24 hours, and the Met department forecast indicates heavy to moderate rain accompanied by thunderstorms over the next 48 hours. The rains have brought the temperature down, with the city recording a maximum of 26 C - six degrees below normal - and a minimum of 23 C.Residences of all ministers have been inundated due to water logging in the city, including that of the chief minister. Patients were shifted from many wards of Agartala Govt Medical College due to water entering the hospital compound. Holidays were declared in many schools. Attendance at the civil secretariat was very thin.
