Tortured in Saudi, man from Tripura returns home

AGARTALA: Gopal Das had given up all hopes of returning home after his pursuit of becoming a millionaire landed him behind bars in Riyadh. Both of them paid Rs 1.5 lakh each for making arrangements of their travel to Saudi Arabia and getting the job of a driver there. On Thursday night, Gopal returned to Agartala after 20 months and and was reunited with his family. Hi wife, Vabita, was also present.It all began when Gopal and his friend Biswajit were sent to a Mumbai-based employment agency in January, 2016. BJP central observer Sunil Deodhar and state president Biplab Kumar Deb received him with a flower bouquet.

AGARTALA: Gopal Das had given up all hopes of returning home after his pursuit of becoming a millionaire landed him behind bars in Riyadh. Subjected to torture by his employer who sent him to jail on charges of criminal activities, life seemed to be a burden for this 34-year-old man of Barpathari village in South Tripura district who had no one to turn to for help in an 'unforgiving' land. Now, he was waiting for only one thing — certain death. But life took a turn in Gopal's favour at this juncture when local BJP leaders informed Prime Minister Narendra Modi and external affairs minister Sushma Swaraj about his predicament who finaly secured his release. On Thursday night, Gopal returned to Agartala after 20 months and and was reunited with his family."There was none to share my terrible predicament. I was waiting for certain death. Everything changed when Indian officials in Riyadh finalised my homecoming last Monday," said Gopal, who was welcomed by hundreds of people, including top leaders of Tripura and his family members, at the Agartala airport. BJP central observer Sunil Deodhar and state president Biplab Kumar Deb received him with a flower bouquet. Hi wife, Vabita, was also present.It all began when Gopal and his friend Biswajit were sent to a Mumbai-based employment agency in January, 2016. Both of them paid Rs 1.5 lakh each for making arrangements of their travel to Saudi Arabia and getting the job of a driver there. They had to wait for a month in Mumbai to get everything cleared.
