Clashes between CPM & BJP rock Tripura again, 17 injured

AGARTALA: A clash between cadres of the CPM and the BJP in Bishalgarh under Sepahijala district of West Tripura on Thursday night has returned the spectre of political violence in the state. Incidents of violence since Thursday night have left at least 17 persons, including women, injured.Both parties have lodged police complaints against each other, and while police have claimed they have begun an investigation, no arrest has been made so far. Additional forces have been deployed in the area to keep the tension in check.BJP vice-president Subal Bhowmik alleged that while returning from the 'Pristha Pramukh' conference at Bishramganj in the afternoon, some CPM cadres attacked two women at Muraibari. Later, in several attacks carried out through the night, six party offices at Bishalgarh were ransacked by miscreants, he added.Bhowmik accused finance minister Bhanu Lal Saha of leading the attacks. He also alleged CPM cadres entered the Bishalgarh hospital where the injured were taken on Thursday night, and in the presence of Saha and local party leaders Partha Pratim Majumdar and Pradip Debnath, they assaulted the BJP workers again."Police was a mere spectator and doctors were helpless, as hundreds of CPM supporters entered the hospital and assaulted three of the critically injured BJP supporters. They blocked the hospital gate to prevent all entry and exit. When our people resorted to a counter-attack to clear the hospital gate, they managed to flee and we shifted the injured persons to Agartala Govt Medical College late at night," Bhowmik alleged. A senior CPM leader, denying allegations that his party had propagated violence, said extra police deployment has been made in the area. "CPM supporters blocked the Agartala-Sabroom highway in front of the Bishalgarh sub-divisional hospital but it is a wrong allegation that the hospital was disturbed."
