Northeast braces for dry spell, foggy days

GUWAHATI: The northeast is about to face a dry spell after the southwest monsoon withdrew from the region last month. "More than anything else, we are concerned about the dry spell because of the scarcity of water. The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) forecast predicted further spells of dry weather with moderate fog in the region over the next 24 hours. Despite shallow to moderate showers during the morning hours that continue to affect normal lives, the dry spell has triggered water crisis in many localities in the city.Available data indicate that the dry spell has prevailed across the states of Arunachal Pradesh Assam , Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura during last 24 hours. Observations released by RMC on Tuesday stated that the lowest minimum temperatures recorded over the last 24 hours are 11.2 degree Celsius at Chaparmukh (Plain) and 8.8 degree Celsius at Barapani (Hills).

Even deep bore wells have failed to pump out water as the water level continues to go down," said Dhruba Talukdar, a resident of the Christianbasti area of the city.A senior official of the Guwahati-based RMC said on Tuesday that there is some respite on the horizon as light rain is expected in isolated areas after the next 72 hours. The density of fog is also likely to decline from Wednesday as more cloud cover is predicted. Observations released by RMC on Tuesday stated that the lowest minimum temperatures recorded over the last 24 hours are 11.2 degree Celsius at Chaparmukh (Plain) and 8.8 degree Celsius at Barapani (Hills).
