AGARTALA: The commandant of the 2nd battalion of Tripura State Rifles (TSR), Tapan Debbarma , was arrested on Wednesday, a day after a journalist was shot dead by his personal guard inside the force's 2nd Battalion headquarters.Sudip Datta Bhowmik, a crime reporter with Syandan Patrika, was killed after he was allegedly caled by Debbarma for some clarification on a news report. Debbarma and Nandalal Reang, who shot Sudip, were produced in court on Wednesday and sent to 10-day police remand. Reang was arrested soon after the killing.SP (West) Abhjit Saptarshi said, "The state government has constituted an SIT headed by DIG (Southern Range) Arindam Nath under the CID. The other members of the SIT are additional SP Lacky Chouhan, DSP Ranjit Das and inspector Babu Lal Debnath." He added that both Debbarma and Reang are being interrogated separately by the SIT.Opposing the government's decision to hand over the case to the CID, a Joint Media Forum delegation demanded that the case be handed over to the CBI within 24 hours.It asked chief minister Manik Sarkar to give up the home portfolio, pay an ex gratia of Rs 5 crore to Sudip's family and take the responsibility of his children and arange jobs for them.
