Agra: To control air pollution in the state, UP Pollution Control Board (UPPCB) has ordered that green belts be developed in all industrial zones, construction sites, community land and abandoned landfill sites. The plantation will depend on pollution level and pollution potential of the sites concerned. For the purpose, specific norms have been set by the UPPCB.According to the order issued by member secretary, UPPCB, Ashish Tewari, the green belt plantation protocol has to be followed at all the specified sites. Officials of UPPCB will visit the same for regular inspections. The order is an obvious fallout of the rising pollution levels in the state. In its latest report released by Greenpeace, three cities of UP made it to the top 10 most polluted cities of the country. The report said UP is the most polluted state of the country with cities like Ghaziabad, Hapur, Bareilly, Firozabad, Kanpur, Lucknow, Agra, Noida and Allahabad having dangerous levels of PM10 particles.(PM10 refers to particles of diameter less than 10 microns. They are comparatively large-sized particles that are generally related to construction and factories.)Giving details, officials said plantation in industrial area have been categorised into “red, orange and green” zones according to pollution potential in the area. Besides, plant species will be decided on the basis of the level of pollution in the area. If particulate matter level is high, then saplings of neem, mahua (honey tree), sheesham (North Indian Rosewood) and amaltas (Cassia Fistula) will be planted. In case, sulphur dioxide levels are high, then saplings of kadam (burflower tree), bamboo and tamarind will be planted,Similarly, particular species will be planted in abandoned landfill sites according to the quality of soil, officials said. If the land is barren, then babool (Gum Arabic tree), sheesham, amla (Indian gooseberry) saplings will be planted.
