Agra: Kasganj police on Sunday busted a gang that used to swap ATM cards of its victims with fake ones and later withdraw cash using the real ATM card. The men would mostly target local villagers at booths across seven neighboring districts, including Etah, Aligarh, Farrukhabad, Mainpuri, Kanpur, Etawah and Auraiya. They duped customers of four specific government banks, which mostly operate exclusively in remote areas.Police have arrested two men of the gang, identified as Ajay Kumar and Sunny Saini, both local residents of Kasganj and have seized Rs 3 lakh cash and 1600 gram prohibited intoxicants from them, along with a Delhi-registered SUV and Mahindra Scorpio.Superintendent of police (SP) Kasganj, Piyush Srivastav said, “The gang was targeting customers at ATM booths hat had no security guards. A majority of the victims were illiterate and hence, gullible.”The gang would offer to help ATM card users with the promise of a “fast transaction”. They would take the ATM card from the victim and replace it with a fake one. As the fake card refused to work, the user was tricked into thinking there was something wrong with his card. Once the user left with the fake ATM, the miscreants would use the real card to withdraw money.“The gang had found a loophole in the ATM transaction process. They would wait for 10 seconds after pressing the ‘withdraw’ button and then press ‘cancel’. As the machine started taking the cash back in, the miscreants would forcefully pull it out. It confused the software and the bank did not send a transaction alert to the ATM card holder. It was during an internal bank audit that a certain amount was found to be missing,” said a cop involved in the investigation of the case.
