Crippled man carried by wife gets prosthetic leg

TOI had published the story of the couple on April 5. Moved by Singh’s condition, Bhagwan Mahaveer Viklang Sahayta Samiti (BMVSS), Jaipur, invited him to their facility and provided him with a prosthetic leg.Prem Bhandari, chairman of Jaipur Foot USA, said that after reading the story in TOI, he immediately contacted KK Sharma, DG, BSF and requested him to arrange for Singh to be brought to BMVSS. The differently abled man was brought to Jaipur from Mathura on April 18. The next day, an artificial leg was fitted to his amputated leg and he was trained to walk around in it. It was on April 20 that he walked on his own feet for the first time since his leg was amputated in 2017.Talking to TOI, Singh said, “I am speechless. I thought I would have to spend the rest of my entire life on a wheelchair and walk with the help of crutches. Now, I can walk on my legs!” (UP government had provided him with a wheelchair along with crutches a day after TOI reported the story). He added that doctors had recommended him some exercises to so that he would be comfortable in his prosthetic leg in a month’s time.Singh’s wife, Vimla, who earlier had to carry him to places was happy she wouldn’t have to do it anymore. “He will be able to go anywhere he wants to go and do whatever he wants to do!” she said.Singh, who used to work as a truck driver, developed clots in his leg last year, which turned gangrenous and had to be amputated. The entire burden of their medical expenses fell on Vimla, who earns a paltry Rs 3,600 a month by working as a cook.
