Severe heatwave grips UP, 75-yr-old dead in Moradabad

Bareilly/Agra/Meerut: Severe heatwave conditions in western Uttar Pradesh claimed its first victim on Friday when a 75-year-old man was found dead near Karbala in Kundarki town of Moradabad. As mercury hovered around 45 degrees Celsius, patients complaining of vomiting, diarrhea and fever filled hospitals. There is a surge in cases of high fever and infections related to different organs. Doctors at the OPD are seeing around 1200 new patients every day.

Bareilly/Agra/Meerut: Severe heatwave conditions in western Uttar Pradesh claimed its first victim on Friday when a 75-year-old man was found dead near Karbala in Kundarki town of Moradabad. As mercury hovered around 45 degrees Celsius, patients complaining of vomiting, diarrhea and fever filled hospitals. Agra’s SN Medical College and District Hospital recorded a 100% occupancy.In Bareilly, chief medical superintendent Dr K S Gupta said, “Though nearly 2,000 patients were daily reporting at the out-patient department around a fortnight back, the daily footfall has now increased to 3500-3750 patients. As 100- 150 patients are being daily admitted, the ward is full beyond its capacity.”In Moradabad which reported the heat-related death, Kundarki SHO Dheeraj Singh Solanki told TOI, "There was no injury sign on his body. It seems that the man died due to a heatstroke. We have sent the body for post-mortem."In Agra, which recorded the hottest day in season at 45 degrees, doctors at the out-patient department (OPD) of SN Medical College said patients of fever and diarrhea included children too.Ajay Agarwal, superintendent in-charge at SN Medical College, said, “As compared to normal turnout of around 500 patients at the OPD, a 30% increase has been recorded in the past two weeks. There is a surge in cases of high fever and infections related to different organs. Majority of such patients are discharged within 48 hours of treatment. We have also made arrangements for additional beds.”Agra district hospital superintendent-in-chief Subodh Kumar said, “Due to hot and humid weather, the number of patients has significantly increased in the past week. Doctors at the OPD are seeing around 1200 new patients every day. These are cases of heatstroke, fever, diarrhea and gastroenteritis. There is 100% occupancy of beds at both the medicine and child care department. Additional arrangements are being made.”Giving advisory to people to avoid heatstroke, Agra chief medical officer Mukesh Kumar Vats said, “The best way to avoid illness under the current weather is to drink pure water at frequent intervals, maintain high standards of cleanliness, consume simple and fresh food items in limited proportions and take oral rehydration salts in case of diarrhea and vomiting. People should avoid going out in sun during afternoon hours.”
