Two teenagers run over by SUV, one hurt on highway

Agra: Two teenage boys were run over by a speeding car while they were crossing the Agra-Gwalior highway early Monday morning in Agra. Another boy was injured.The incident occurred at about 5:15 am on the highway close to Sewla Jat area under Sadar police jurisdiction when a group of four teenagers were crossing the road. Two of the boys, identified as Sandeep Kushwaha and Bhanu, died on way to hospital, while the third boy, Mohit, was gravely injured. As many as 570 were also injured. The driver tried hard to control the car and applied the brakes to stop but couldn’t avoid the accident.“The retired Army man, who was on the wheel, rushed the victims to a nearest private hospital in his car but only one boy could be saved.

All the victims hailed from Naina Brahmin village and were the students of Class VII.Fauji Ram, uncle of Mohit, said, “The boys had gone for jogging near the highway when a speeding SUV hit them.”Ajay, the teen, who was with the group, said, “After the incident, the driver of the SUV took the three to a private hospital in his car.”The accused driver was identified as Jitendar Tomar, a retired Army man who was returning home to Tajganj in Agra along with a relative from Bhind, Madhya Pradesh.Station house officer Narendar Kumar of Sadar said, “The teenagers were crossing the divider on the highway when the speeding car hit them. The driver tried hard to control the car and applied the brakes to stop but couldn’t avoid the accident.“The retired Army man, who was on the wheel, rushed the victims to a nearest private hospital in his car but only one boy could be saved. Based on the written complaint of one of the victim’s relative, an FIR against Tomar has been lodged under IPC sections 279 (rash driving or riding on a public way), 304A (causing death by negligence) and 337(causing hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others),” he added.According to transport ministry data, in 2016, Agra stood third in the state with 522 casualties in total 1,062 road accidents. As many as 570 were also injured.
