Forest department to plant 20 lakh saplings ahead of monsoon

Agra: Ahead of monsoon, the forest department has set a target of planting 20 lakh trees in the city. It is also reaching out to residents and social groups.District forest officer Manish Mittal said, “We have set a target of planting 20 lakh trees ahead of this monsoon. We are also laying equal emphasis on nurturing the planted saplings.” The aim is to grow one tree per person in the city. The department will not only plant on government land but will also distribute saplings to citizens so they can grow them in their own space.According to officials, the aim is to have at least one new tree for every person in Agra.

Social organizations have been roped in to promote the campaign. So far, Agra Footwear Manufacturers and Exporters Chamber (AFMEC), which has agreed to distribute 1 lakh trees, and some other groups have signed up to increase green cover in the city.The state forest and wildlife department, which does not have sufficient land to go for a major increase in the city’s green cover, has started educating farmers about the benefits of planting fruit trees on spare parts or bordering areas of their farms.
