AGRA: More than a month after a row erupted over replacing Dr Bhim Rao Ambedkar statue with that of Pandit Deendayal Upadhyay in the civic body premises here, Agra Municipal Corporation (AMC) executive council on Monday decided to install a mega statue of the founder member of Bharatiya Jana Sangh (forerunner of BJP) at Atal Chowk outside Agra Cantt railway station Mayor Naveen Jain said, “Earlier, a committee of councilors was constituted to identify suitable space for installation of the statue of Pt Deendayal Upadhyay. During the meeting, a proposal for installing the statue near Atal Chowk in Agra Cantt was presented. The proposal was approved unanimously by members of the executive council. A grand statue will be installed soon. Officials have been directed to make arrangements in this regard”.The executive council also took a decision for development of an auditorium at Panchkuiyan road. In this regard, a work proposal will be prepared and sent for approval of the state government. The matter of placing a statue of Pt Upadhyay surfaced when the cultural directorate of the state in May shot a two-page order to Agra district administration, asking them to replace one of the two statues of Dr Bhim Rao Ambedkar with that of Pandit Upadhyay in AMC premises. The order came after five-time BJP MLA Jagan Prasad Garg wrote to chief minister Yogi Adityanath, requesting him to install a statue of the champion of Dalit rights and former president of Bharatiya Jana Sangh.More than 90% of AMC workers are Dalits while 24 of the 100 councillors belong to Scheduled Caste community. However, after a row erupted over the issue, the mayor ordered that none of the two Ambedkar statues shall be removed from civic body premises. And a grand statue of Pt Deendayal Upadhyay will be installed at another public place in the city.Speaking about the decision taken by the executive council, MLA Jagan Prasad Garg told TOI, “It is good that decision has been taken to install a statue of the leader in the city. But this has nothing to with the original demand raised by me. Soon, I will ensure installation of a statue of Pt Upadhyay in the civic body premises.”
