Registrations at Agra University drop by more than half

  • | Wednesday | 18th July, 2018

Agra: With just two days to go before registrations for admissions close at Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar University, only 80,000 students have registered so far this year, compared to 2,13,336 registrations last year. University public relations officer GS Sharma said, “The number of registrations will increase. The more than 60% drop in registrations can be attributed to the bad name the university has earned, thanks to its allegedly poor academic standards, delay in declaring results, errors in marksheets, widespread malpractices, etc. Earlier, students would turn up at the university only for exams, so they could obtain a degree. Despite efforts of the officials, a majority of seats remained vacant in agriculture and law courses.

Agra: With just two days to go before registrations for admissions close at Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar University, only 80,000 students have registered so far this year, compared to 2,13,336 registrations last year. The more than 60% drop in registrations can be attributed to the bad name the university has earned, thanks to its allegedly poor academic standards, delay in declaring results, errors in marksheets, widespread malpractices, etc. However, university officials hope that the number of applicants will pick up in the next two days.Last year, 2,13,336 students had applied for admissions for courses run at the university’s residential wing and the colleges affiliated to it. This year, out of the 80,000 registrations recorded so far, 68,000 were for under-graduate courses and 12,000 for post graduate courses.Concerned about the sharp decrease in the number of applicants this year, the university administration is looking for ways to tackle the situation. University public relations officer GS Sharma said, “The number of registrations will increase. The university administration is keeping a tab on the situation. The web registration system was introduced last year to stop malpractices and bring transparency in the admission, exam and evaluation process. It has been successful so far. Earlier, students would turn up at the university only for exams, so they could obtain a degree. Now that we have a database with details of all students, such practices are no longer possible.”Earlier this month, the university had organized a counselling session for admission to courses that required candidates to clear an entrance test. Despite efforts of the officials, a majority of seats remained vacant in agriculture and law courses.
