Three months into session 1 crore primary students still havenrsquot got text books

AGRA: Around 60% students of state government-run primary and upper primary schools, numbering over one crore children, have not been provided text books by the basic education department. An internal assessment conducted by the department has revealed that even after much delay, books have not been distributed to students so far. Meanwhile English medium schools started by the state government are operating without books.According to the basic education department records, around 1.73 crore students are enrolled in primary schools of the state government. All these students under the Right to Education (RTE) act are required to be provided new books free of cost. After initial delay, deadline of July 15 was set to complete the distribution of books to the students.

Meanwhile English medium schools started by the state government are operating without books.According to the basic education department records, around 1.73 crore students are enrolled in primary schools of the state government. All these students under the Right to Education (RTE) act are required to be provided new books free of cost. For this the state government had allotted Rs 252 crore.According to sources, from class I to VIII, over 9 crore books of 105 different subjects were targeted to be printed. After initial delay, deadline of July 15 was set to complete the distribution of books to the students. But so far the printing of books has not been completed and less than 40% of the books have been distributed.Sources suggest supply of books is yet to begin in 4000 special English medium schools started by the state government earlier this year. These schools are operating without any text books.District general secretary of Uttar Pradeshiya Prathmik Shikshak Sangh, Brajesh Dixit said, “Change in course content and delay in supply of books is causing much inconvenience. Teaching and learning has been badly affected in a majority of the schools. In Agra district , no textbook of class I, II or III has been supplied. For class IV, only three books have been made available out of six. And four books in class 5. None of the 13 textbooks of class VI have been received.”Manoj Kumar, officer in-charge for primary textbooks said, “All possible efforts are being made to complete the distribution of books by the end of this month. As soon as books are printed, they are supplied in the districts.”
