Agra: Basic Shiksha Adhikari here ordered a probe after a video clip showing primary school students working to clear up waterlogging in the premises was widely circulated on social media. The video shows the students collecting dirty water in buckets and throwing it away. The incident happened in a school at Garhi Baldev village in Shamshabad block.Following heavy rains recently, several schools in the district have been facing the problem of waterlogging due to poor drainage system. The primary school at Garhi Baldev is among them. The space between the entrance and classrooms was completely submerged in water after the rainfall. Both students and teachers were forced to wade through the dirty water to reach the classrooms. But instead of informing the block education officer about the situation, the school authorities apparently decided to clear the water on their own. Iinstead of seeking help from sanitation workers, the principal and staff made students take up the task. The three short duration videos show students in uniform, filling dirty water into buckets and throwing it away under the supervision of staffers. After the videos went viral on social media, people demanded action against the school principal and teachers for making students clear the water.Basic Shiksha Adhikari Anand Prakash Sharma told TOI, “I have watched the videos. What has happened is not acceptable. Children should not have been asked to clear waterlogging in school premises. I have asked the basic education officer to investigate the matter and take strict action against those concerned. We will ensure such cases are not repeated.”Block education officer, Shamshabad, Omprakash Yadav said, “I tried to contact the headmistress of the school later in the afternoon. But I was not able to reach her. On Monday, I will personally visit the school for spot inspection. Action will be taken in the matter. Teachers should have informed my office in case of waterlogging. Required arrangements would have been made.”Brajesh Dixit, district general secretary of Primary Teachers Association, said, “Making students clear water cannot be justified. Teachers should have called a sanitation worker on duty in the village to clear the water. But the problem is that sanitation workers do not listen to teachers. In rural areas, they serve as private employees of the gram pradhan. Officials hardly take any action on issues relating to maintenance of sanitation and hygiene in schools or poor infrastructure.”
