Former CEC to attend Sir Syed Day-2018 at AMU

Agra: Dr S Y Quraishi, former chief election commissioner (CEC) of India, will attend the Sir Syed Day-2018 celebrations of Aligarh Muslim University ( AMU ) on October 17 as the chief guest.The decision was taken after a consultative meeting headed by the AMU vice chancellor, professor Tariq Mansoor. Quraishi assumed charge as the 17th chief election commissioner of India on July 30, 2010, prior to which he served as the election commissioner since 2006.As the CEC, Quraishi brought special focus on peoples’ participation, voters’ education and the involvement of youth through scientific research and interventions.Quraishi completed his Masters degree from St. Stephen's College, University of Delhi, before joining the Indian Administrative Services in 1971. He served at both the central and state levels, including as secretary, Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Government of India.He has also served as the director general of Doordarshan (National Television Network) and director general of Nehru Yuva Kendra Sangathan (NYKS), India's largest rural youth development agency.Dr Quraishi is a recipient of several prestigious awards, such as the Nehru Fellow for Innovative and Outstanding Work in Child Welfare, Secular India Harmony Award for Contribution to Human Understanding, Silver Elephant National Award of Indian Scouts and Guides and Shiromani Award for commitment to national progress and human welfare.
