In 12 years, 489 died in 824 train derailments in country

Agra: The number of casualties in train derailments across the country has been steadily rising. Railways data accessed by TOI show 489 people died in 824 derailments between January 2006 and November 2017, with the highest number of fatalities (193) in a decade reported during 2016-17. Of these 16 derailments, four took place in the North Central Railway (NCR) zone in which three people died and losses to the tune of Rs 1.64 crore were incurred. Three other derailments in NCR were of goods trains, leading to total losses of Rs 44.20 lakh.In the South Eastern Railway (SER) zone, two derailments were reported while the East Central Railway (ECR) saw six derailments during the same period. The derailment of the Indore-Rajendranagar Express on November 20, 2016, near Pokhrayan in Uttar Pradesh saw 152 deaths, and 39 people lost their lives when the Hirakhand Express derailed in Andhra Pradesh’s Vizianagaram district on January 21, 2017.

The derailment of the Indore-Rajendranagar Express on November 20, 2016, near Pokhrayan in Uttar Pradesh saw 152 deaths, and 39 people lost their lives when the Hirakhand Express derailed in Andhra Pradesh’s Vizianagaram district on January 21, 2017. The data also show that more than 72% of the casualties were reported between 2014 and 2017, with the total figure of deaths touching 356.An audit report by CAG on train derailment tabled earlier in the year had claimed that of the 19 derailments between 2014 and March 2017, sixteen happened due to “rail fracture, track defects, poor rail weld and track buckling”, leading to losses to the tune of Rs 3.54 crore. Of these 16 derailments, four took place in the North Central Railway (NCR) zone in which three people died and losses to the tune of Rs 1.64 crore were incurred. Three other derailments in NCR were of goods trains, leading to total losses of Rs 44.20 lakh.In the South Eastern Railway (SER) zone, two derailments were reported while the East Central Railway (ECR) saw six derailments during the same period. The South Western Railway (SWR) reported three express train derailments, while the Southern Railway (SR) reported one mail train derailment.The CAG report further states that investigation reports of the Indore-Rajendranagar Express derailment (causing an estimated loss of Rs 6 crore), the Sealdah-Ajmer Express crash on December 28, 2016 (resulting in Rs 4.67 crore loss) and derailment of the Jabalpur-Hazrat Nizamuddin Mahakaushal Express train on March 30, 2017(causing a loss of Rs 25.6 lakh) are yet to be submitted by the commissioner of railway safety (CRS).
