Agra: The Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) administration on Tuesday revoked the suspension of two Kashmiri students after a fact finding committee gave them a clean chit on the grounds that there was no evidence of them raising ‘azadi (independence) slogans in the campus. However, the sedition cases registered against them by the UP Police have not been withdrawn yet.Registrar of the university Abdul Hamid told TOI that the CCTV footage of the lawn, where the students had gathered at that time, was not available. He said the cameras were pointing towards the entry of Kennedy hall, and hence could not cover the lawn area.Aligarh senior superintendent of police (SSP) Ajay Kumar Sahini said the SIT will verify the evidences before concluding the investigation. He further said that they will forward the AMU probe report to the SIT once they receive it.Police booked Waseem Ayoub Malik and Abdul Haseeb Mir after a video, shot in the campus a day after scholar-turned terrorist Mannan Wani died in an encounter, surfaced purportedly showing Kashmiri students raising ‘azadi’ slogans.Expressing happiness over the report, AMU students union vice-president Sajjad Subhan Rather, who is also a Kashmiri, said “We hope the justice will come from the UP Police too”.Earlier in the day, the alumni meet at AMU witnessed a silent protest by Kashmiri students, including girls, against the sedition charges pressed against the students. With tapes on their lips the students held posters of “Free speech is our right”, “Being Kashmiri is not a crime”, “Don’t play with our careers” and “Revoke sedition and suspension”.
