Water supply down to a trickle in several parts of city, residents suffer

Agra: For the past three days, over a dozen localities in the city have been reeling under water scarcity . Coinciding with the festival period — Diwali, Goverdhan puja and Bhai Dooj — people have been facing a tough time. Water supply has been affected due to mechanical faults and damages in the pipeline. Officials of the Jal Sansthan have not been able to carry out repairs.At the same time, water level in river Yamuna has dipped to 282 feet, which is just two feet above the minimum level necessary to run the Jeevani Mandi water works station, sources said.On an average, 1,000 cusec of water is discharged from Gokul Barrage in Mathura per day in river Yamuna for supplying water to Agra. But Jal Sansthan has not been able pump it to different localities of the city. These include Shivaji Nagar, Raja Ki Mandi, Kala Mahal, Dhuliyaganj, Chatta, Kotwali, Naya Baans, Joshiyan, Puniyapara, Kishorpura, Gokulpura, Kishorpura, Transport Nagar, Daresi, Rawatpara, Noori Darwaza and Trans-Yamuna locality.Most of these areas are densely populated, where supply was not enough for meeting basic requirements.Chatta locality resident Vijay Uttam said, “The Jal Sansthan was not able to maintain water supply during the festival period. Since the past three days, we have been suffering from water scarcity. Officials are not taking our calls.”Naresh Agarwal, a Gokulpura resident, said, “In the last three days, we have been getting water supply for only 10 to 15 minutes in the morning. The quality of the water is very bad. It is brownish in colour and emits a foul smell.”According to a Jal Sansthan official, the water level in river Yamuna has dropped to 282 feet at the Jeevani Mandi water works station. If this happens, water supply to major parts of the city can be affected, he warned.The Jeevani Mandi water works station, which caters to a major part of the city, has a total capacity of 225 MLD till now. It has two water treatment plants of 90 MLD each and one of 45 MLD. While one of the 90 MLD plants is not working due to ongoing repairs and maintenance works under the Gangajal project, the other one does not perform at its full capacity as it is several decades old.Meanwhile, the zonal pumping station at Shahganj stopped working on Friday due to a technical problem. As a result, no water was supplied to several colonies.On Saturday, Jal Sansthan officials swung into action and repaired the supply line at Dhuliyaganj.Anwar Khwaja, executive engineer of Jal Sansthan, said, “The rising main pipeline in Dhuliyaganj has been repaired. The non-functional motor at the Shahganj zonal pumping station is being replaced. The situation of short water supply in different parts of the city will be sorted out in a time-bound manner.”
