PWD directed to fix roads by December 25

AGRA: The state government has directed the PWD department to get done with all the repair works of state highways and major district roads by December 25.Reportedly, Rs 500 crore will be spent on road-repair in the Agra region in the next one month. Besides roads, other public infrastructure development projects will also be undertaken. State government has issued detailed directives in this regard to the PWD department.For the current financial year, the PWD department was allocated Rs 6000 crore budget by the state government. So far, the department has not been able to spend half of the total budget. Development works in major parts of the state remained at a standstill due to monsoons. Now, state government has ordered the department to complete all pending works before the approaching foggy winter days.It is also to be noted that with the Lok Sabha election due to take place in 2019, the model code of conduct is likely to come into force before March 31, 2019, which will leave department with less time for quality development works and proper utilisation of funds. Thus, the department has been ordered to gear-up.State government’s principal secretary (PWD) Nitin Ramesh Gokarn said, “Department has been given the target to complete Rs 2000 crore worth pending road related works within one month. All the state highways and major district roads will be repaired. Besides, all projects related to public infrastructure which have been already approved will also be completed by December 25.”“To ensure that the work is done in a time-bound manner, the progress will be monitored on weekly basis. Action will be taken against engineers who won’t finish their targets on time”, he said.The PWD department has the responsibility for maintenance of around 2.5 lakh kilometre of road. Road repairing works are avoided in the monsoon and the winter season as it become difficult to maintain a high temperature of coal tar, used in road construction.
