Agra: A 21-year-old Portuguese national, pursuing MTech in Aerospace engineering from IIT-Madras, died here on Saturday after being crushed under the wheels of Ajmer-Agra Intercity Express at Idgah Railway station on Friday night.Identified as Jorge Gomes Santos, the victim was a resident of Quinta Da Carapalha of Castelo Branco district, Portugal. He was travelling to Agra along with his three Portuguese friends Antonio Faninhas, Beatriz Oliveina and Rita Costa (all students of IIT Madras) from Jaipur in Ajmer-Agra Fort intercity express on Friday night, when the unfortunate incident took place.Speaking to TOI, Kripal Shankar, station house officer of Agra Fort GRP said, “The four Portuguese friends were supposed to alight at Agra Fort station but they took Idgah station for their destination. Antonio and Jorge got off the train. However, after realizing their mistake, the duo attempted to board the running train, during which Jorge came under the wheels.”Narrating the sequence of event to GRP Agra Fort, one of the victim’s friend wrote: “None of us saw as what exactly happened when Jorge attempted to board the running train. By the time we reached hospital, Jorge succumbed to his injuries.”According to police, Jorge died at around 1:20 am on Saturday, while he came under the train at around 10 pm on Friday.After the incident, the GRP personnel sent request to the Tourism Police requesting them to inform the Portugal embassy about the incident.
