State government plans to regularize contractual workers in urban bodies

Agra: Ahead of the Lok Sabha election, the state government is working on a plan to regularise the appointment of contractual workers and daily-wage workers in municipal corporations, Jal Sansthan and other urban local bodies. However, those orders were never implemented.In March 2017, the BJP government led by chief minister Yogi Adityanath took over. The state ministry of urban development has sought details of all temporary employees from the civic bodies.A senior officer of the urban development department, who did not want to be named, said, “In the first phase, workers appointed before December 31, 2001 will be regularised. Urban local bodies of all districts in UP have been asked to provide the details in time.”The previous Samajwadi Party government, led by chief minister Akhilesh Yadav, had issued an order regarding regularization of contractual workers on February 24, 2016. So far, we have received data of around 600 workers.

However, those orders were never implemented.In March 2017, the BJP government led by chief minister Yogi Adityanath took over. The president of urban local body employees association, SK Mishra, along with other leaders, have been requesting the chief minister and urban development minister Suresh Khanna to appoint contractual workers on vacant spots for the past several years.The urban development department, on December 29, sent a letter to all urban local bodies to provide details of contractual workers and daily wagers.According to records of the urban development ministry, a total of 307 civic bodies, including the municipal corporation of Agra, Firozabad, Ayodhya, Aligarh, Shahjahanpur and Meerut, as well as the Jal Sasthan of Agra, Kanpur, Jhansi and Varanasi, haven’t provided the required details yet. A reminder has been sent to them.
