UP mourns its dead: Markets shut, sea of mourners join martyrs’ kin of in grief

Meerut/Agra: In a first, shutdown of markets in Uttar Pradesh was voluntary, and it was across the state. On Saturday morning, their bodies came home wrapped in Tricolours.Pradeep’s elder son Siddharth conducted the last rites amid full state honours. While one each was from Maharajganj, Deoria, Allahabad, Chandauli and Varanasi districts of eastern UP. People set Pakistan flags on fire and demanded action against the neighbouring country for harboring militants. In the afternoon, his cremation too was conducted amid emotionally-charged atmosphere.Markets across the state were shut and protests were witnessed in almost every city, town and village of the state.

Meerut/Agra: In a first, shutdown of markets in Uttar Pradesh was voluntary, and it was across the state. In the cities, towns and villages where the bodies of slain CRPF men were being brought, sea of mourners stood by the grieving kin.Of the 44 CRPF personnel killed in the Valley on Thursday, maximum 12 were from the state.And, out of the 12 slain security personnel, two were from Shamli and one each from Agra and Mainpuri districts of western UP. While one each was from Maharajganj, Deoria, Allahabad, Chandauli and Varanasi districts of eastern UP. And one each was from central UP’s Kannauj, Kanpur Dehat and Unnao districts. All of them were cremated with full state honours on Saturday.Constables Pradeep Kumar (37) and Amit Kumar (21), both from Shamli, had left their homes after completing vacations on February 12. On Saturday morning, their bodies came home wrapped in Tricolours.Pradeep’s elder son Siddharth conducted the last rites amid full state honours. As the funeral pyre was lit, anti-Pakistan slogan drowned the sound of gun shots. Pradeep’s brother, Sanjay Kumar, who is serving in Indo-Tibetan Border Force (ITBP), said: “We need another surgical strike to avenge the brutal attack.” The cremation ceremony was attended by Union minister and Baghpat MP Satyapal Singh.Meanwhile, Amit Kumar’s funeral procession also witnessed thousands of mourners, including Union minister and former chief of the Army Staff Gen. VK Singh.The remains of constable Ram Vakil Mathurat of Vinayakpur village in Mainpuri also reached home on Saturday morning. In the afternoon, his cremation too was conducted amid emotionally-charged atmosphere.Markets across the state were shut and protests were witnessed in almost every city, town and village of the state.
