The government on January 30 had directed the basic education department to record signatures of students every day after they finish their midday meal. The government said that the move is aimed to put a tab on malpractices in the central-government funded scheme and improve effectiveness of primary school education by providing nutritional food to children.The order issued to all district magistrates and basic education department officials read that the system of signing the register after eating midday meal has been successfully implemented in Banda district. The education department has decided to implement it across the state with immediate effect. For those studying in class 1 and 2, students should be taught how to sign, the order read .The letter of the additional chief secretary said, “Students who are unable to sign – especially those from Class I and II – should be trained to do it. As an alternate option, they should be taught one letter from the alphabet and it should be considered as their signature . If any child is absent on a particular day, he/she should be marked absent with red ink.”The letter also lists the format in which signatures of students should be taken.Agra basic shiksha adhikari Anand Prakash Sharma said, “The order of the government concerning new system to take signature of students after they eat the midday meal was received on January 30. On the same day the orders were forward to the block education officers to ensure effective implementation from February 1 onward. However, the orders have not been implemented so far. Notices will be issued to block education officers. Action will be taken against principals who fail to start recording signatures of students within next one week”.
