AMU tense after student held, hundreds court arrest

Agra: Passions ran high in Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) as a large number of students gathered at the Bab-e-Syed gate of the varsity on Monday evening to protest against the arrest of a student, who was allegedly involved in the February 12 violence on the campus. Aligarh SSP Akash Kulhari said that the police had video evidence of him vandalising a vehicle. Till the time of filing this report, a large gathering of students stood inside AMU campus facing a wall of policemen demanding to be arrested en masse.Earlier on Monday, police had arrested Mohd Talib, an undergraduate student, on charges of vandalism and promoting enmity between two communities.

Aligarh SSP Akash Kulhari said that the police had video evidence of him vandalising a vehicle. Talib, who was booked under sections 153-A (promoting enmity), 427 (mischief causing damage to the amount of fifty rupees), 379 (theft) and 201 (causing disappearance of evidence of offence) of IPC, was remanded to judicial custody for 14 days.The SSP told TOI that one of the two students, who fired on Bharatiya Janta Yuva Morcha (BJYM) leader Mukesh Lodhi on February 12, have also been identified. Police will arrest him soon.Aligarh district magistrate CB Singh said that police are taking action on the basis of available evidence. He said that he expects proper cooperation from the university administration and assured that no innocent will be humiliated.On February 12, a protest was held in AMU against the proposed visit of All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen leader Asaduddin Owaisi to the campus. An altercation had occurred between AMU security officer, students and journalists of private news channel over live coverage of the event while the channel had no permission to do so.The students and BJYM workers had subsequently clashed outside the campus, leading to arson and vandalisation. During the violence, the students allegedly raised anti-national slogans, according to a complaint filed by Mukesh Lodhi, BJP’s youth wing district president.On the complaint of Lodhi, a total of 14 students, including AMU students’ union president Salman Imtiaz, vice-president Humza Sufyan, secretary Hufaiza Aamir, former president of the union Maskoor Ahmed, former secretary Nadeem Ansari and other unidentified students, were booked on various charges, including sedition. However, no evidence to support the sedation charges have been found by the police as of yet.
