Agra: The Agra Municipal Corporation (AMC) administration is planning to collect charges for garbage collection from all residential, commercial, government premises and street vendors from April 1. AMC has so far fixed the minimum rate of garbage collection at Rs 40 per month. While charges for all categories have been fixed, it has been decided that no money will be charged from below poverty line (BPL) families.Under the smart city project, AMC aims to collect garbage from all houses in the 100 city wards by 2019-20. Private agencies have been contacted for the same and the civic body has started surveying all the areas. While so far, the municipal body has implemented the door-to-door garbage collection scheme only for certain posh areas, AMC is also planning to start waste segregation at source.According to rates determined for garbage collection, Rs 40 per month will be the basic fare followed by Rs 50 for economically weaker sections, Rs 70 for middle income group households and Rs 90 for high income group houses.Offices with up to 50 employees will have to pay Rs 310 per month and vendors will have to shell Rs 250 per month. Meat shops owners will be charged Rs 830, hotels with 20 beds will have to Rs 3160. Schools with more than 500 students will have to pay Rs 3,190 and medium level business premises, including cinema halls, will have to pay Rs 1,270 per month. Small shops will be charged Rs 60 and marriage houses will be charged Rs 2 per kg solid waste. In medical waste category, it has been decided that Rs 2,750 will be collected from a 20-beded hospital.AMC environment engineer Rajiv Rathi said, “At present, the door-to-door garbage collection service is provided free of cost at several localities but from April 1, residents will have to pay for it. We are now fixing all the modalities such as hiring contractual workers and garbage trucks and awarding contracts to companies for the smooth transition of the process. Through the move we want to ensure that the touristy city of Agra is maintained properly.”He added that the civic body has fixed charges for 10 different categories. “We have sought area-wise data from agencies regarding producers of the municipal solid waste. We don’t want garbage littered on the roads but a smooth mechanism in place for proper disposal of garbage. The segregated dry waste will be used to generate electricity and an energy facility will be built at Chalesar,” he said.Mukesh Goyal, a resident of Bodla resident, said, “This is a good initiative by the AMC as maintaining proper sanitation and hygiene is their responsibility. But their charges seem to be over-priced and they should streamline it first.”However, Vinay Pathak, a resident of Rawatpara, said that they were okay paying the charges. “For better sanitation and hygiene we don’t have any issue to pay Rs 50 per month. But officials must ensure quality service.”
