Agra: A probe was ordered on Wednesday into the construction of a nullah and other developmental works in Bijlighar and on Fatehabad road under the smart city project by divisional commissioner Anil Kumar, after complaints of corruption surfaced. Some councilors had complained that sub-standard material was being used in building the nullah, laying interlocking tiles and road construction. The entire work is estimated to cost around Rs 5 crore.Councilor Rakesh Jain said, “The nullah had to be constructed using reinforce concrete cement (RCC). However, several-decades-old bricks extracted during digging of the nullah are being reused. The work estimate does not allow the use of old bricks. The entire nullah is required to be constructed using high quality material but what is being used is sub-standard. The nullah will get damaged within a few years.”Councilor Ravi Bihari Mathur said, “The construction of the nullah at Bijli ghar is planned to take place in 50 meter radius of the road crossing. However, the old nullah has been damaged up to a distance of 200 meter. This was done to benefit a certain private contractor and assign him additional work under the smart city project. We have demanded the divisional commissioner to ensure fair probe in the matter and strict action against those found guilty.”Councilor Praveen Patel said, “We have also sent a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, highlighting the matter of high corruption taking place in smart city project works. We want standard quality nullah construction and action against engineers guilty of corruption and misuse of funds. Even after several complaints, the civic body administration has not taken action in the matter. We are not shown detailed estimate of work taking place in Bijlighar area.”
