Notice to 12 tax officials for poor recovery of property tax

The senior official has also sought records of major defaulters in the four civic zones.Last year, the state government had directed municipal corporations to become self-reliant by increasing overall revenue generation. Following this, the municipal board of councilors had set a target of collecting Rs 55 crore from house tax. AMC should have collected at least Rs 50 crore in house tax by March 15 but even after six days of delay, only Rs 43 crore has been collected as on Friday.According to councilor Rakesh Jain, “The pace of house tax recovery is very slow. Official mismanagement is the main reason behind it. As per the current state of affairs, like previous years, they will not be able to complete the target this year.”Municipal commissioner Arun Prakash said, “Tax department officials have been warned of strict action in case of negligence towards recovery of house tax. Notices have been issued to 12 officials for their carelessness. They have been asked to meet the individual targets assigned to them within the next one week. A list of major defaulters is being prepared and these people will be asked to clear the dues or else legal action will be initiated against them.”According to the civic body records, of the 1.80 lakh registered property owners, only 80,000 are regularly paying their taxes. Earlier, a city-wide survey found that majority of the 500 hotels operating in the city were not registered with the civic body and had not paid property tax on commercial rates.
