AGRA: Haryanvi singer-dancer Sapna Chaudhary on Saturday joined the Congress party in the run-up to the crucial 2019 Lok Sabha elections. According to sources, the party may field her from Jat-dominated Mathura constituency against BJP’s sitting member of Parliament and former actor Hema Malini.Chaudhary, 28, who enjoys immense popularity in the Hindi-speaking belt, particularly Jats, was inducted into the party at the residence of Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee chief Raj Babbar at Ashoka Road in Delhi.UP Congress's organizational secretary Narendra Rathi told TOI, "Sapna Chaudhary joined the party in my presence in Delhi on Saturday."While sources close to Sapna claimed that she has joined the Congress on the assurance of a ticket from Mathura, there was no official confirmation about it."Any decision on her candidature will be made by the party president," Rathi said.Born in 1990 in Haryana’s Rohtak district, Sapna lost her father at a young age and began to perform in local orchestras to earn her livelihood. She also started participating in local Ragini competitions.Sapna’s dance videos began trending on the internet and she shot to phenomenal popularity within no time. Her 2017 song ‘Teri Aakhya Ka Yo Kajal’ set the internet on fire. It crossed 380 million views on YouTube and remained one of top trending videos in 2018 and is still trending. With over 1.7 million followers on Instagram, the Bigg Boss 11 contestant is one of the most popular artistes in the music industry.Sapna Chaudhary made her Bollywood debut with item number ‘Hatt Ja Tau’ in Veerey Ki Wedding and featured in a song called ‘Tere Thumke Sapna Choudhary’ in Abhay Deol-starrer Nanu Ki Janu. She also performed in a song in Ravi Kishan-starrer Bhojpuri film Bairi Kangana-2.Following murmurs within the BJP about shifting Hema Malini to Fatehpur Sikri , the party reposed her faith in the actor on Friday and renominated her.Soon after this, AICC spokesperson Priyanka Chaturvedi had tweeted, “Dear Brijwasis, despite discontent with your sitting MP Hema Malini, the party you voted for has fielded her yet again from Mathura. Make your vote count this time."In 2014, Malini had defeated RLD’s Jayant Chaudhary by a margin of 3 lakh votes.
